Frequently Asked Questions

And a few questions people usually keep to themselves.

What's a Field Brief?

A Field Brief is a practical starting point for a confusing topic.
Not a textbook.
Not a giant course.
Not an attempt to teach you everything.
The goal is to help you understand what matters first, build a useful mental model, and recognize where deeper research belongs.

What does “the useful 20%” mean?

paragraph

Is NEP trying to replace vendor documentation?

paragraph

Are Field Briefs certification guides?

paragraph

Why not just use ChatGPT?

paragraph

Shouldn’t network engineers already know this stuff?

paragraph

Do I need to memorize everything?

paragraph

What if the useful 20% is not enough?

Then go deeper.
That is part of the NEP Loop:ORIENT → APPLY → NOTICE → DEEPEN → KEEP.
The useful 20% gets you moving.
Real work exposes the gaps.
Those gaps tell you where deeper research is actually worth your time.

Is NEP only for beginners?

Nope
NEP is for engineers who regularly encounter things they don’t fully understand yet.
That can happen in year one.
It can also happen in year fifteen.
New platform.
New project.
New environment.
New problem.
Nobody graduates from unfamiliar work.

What if networking is just a job to me?

Perfectly acceptable.
You don’t have to dream about BGP.
You can want to be competent, respected, well-paid, and then go do something completely unrelated after work.
NEP is practical network engineering for people who want competence, confidence, and a life outside IT.
